There was a time when a bicycle helmet had one simple job: protect your head. Today, cycling looks very different.
With more people commuting by bike, riding e-bikes, navigating busy city streets, and using electric mobility every day, riders expect more from their equipment. Visibility matters. Communication matters. Technology matters. And, most importantly, safety needs to keep pace with the way people ride.
This is where UNIT 1 enters the picture. Rather than treating a helmet as just another piece of protective equipment, UNIT 1 approaches cycling gear as part of a connected riding experience. Its smart helmets combine protection, visibility, lighting, technology, and modern design to create equipment built for today’s riders.
What If Your Helmet Could Do More?
Think about your average ride. You’re approaching an intersection. Cars are nearby. The light is changing. You’re slowing down and preparing to turn. A traditional helmet simply stays on your head.
A UNIT 1 smart helmet can add another layer of visibility and awareness through integrated lighting, turn signals, automatic brake lights, and other connected features, depending on the model.
That’s the fundamental idea behind smart cycling gear: technology should work in the background while you concentrate on the road ahead.
Protection Meets Intelligent Design
Smart technology is impressive, but a cycling helmet still needs to begin with protection. UNIT 1‘s smart helmet range includes models with safety certifications designed for different riding environments. AURA and NEON, for example, carry NTA-8776 certification alongside EN-1078 and CPSC certifications, making them designed with higher-speed e-bike riding in mind.
Selected UNIT 1 helmets also use MIPS technology, which is designed to help manage rotational forces during certain angled impacts. The result is a different way of thinking about helmet design: technology isn’t replacing protection—it is being integrated around it.
Visibility Isn’t Just a Feature—It’s Part of the Ride
Being visible can be especially important when cycling in urban environments, during early mornings, evenings, or changing weather conditions.
UNIT 1 incorporates integrated lighting into its smart helmets. Depending on the model, riders can get rear lighting or both front and rear lights, while AURA, FARO, and NEON offer turn signals and automatic brake-light functionality.
For someone commuting through a busy city, these features can make communication with surrounding road users feel more intuitive. Instead of relying only on hand signals, riders can use integrated technology to communicate their movements.
Meet the UNIT 1 Family
Different riders need different equipment, which is why UNIT 1 offers several smart helmet designs.
• AURA is positioned as a versatile option for city and road riding, combining front and rear lighting with smart features and e-bike certification.
• NEON focuses on everyday city riding with a lightweight design and integrated rear lighting.
• FARO is designed around urban riding and visibility, including front and rear lighting and a hidden RGB light beneath its fabric design.
• For younger riders, SPARKY brings smart lighting into a junior-focused helmet designed for children aged approximately 3–9.
• This range gives cyclists the opportunity to choose a helmet according to how and where they ride.
When Technology Knows Something Has Gone Wrong
One of the most interesting aspects of smart cycling equipment is what happens when a ride doesn’t go according to plan.
AURA, FARO, and NEON include crash detection. According to UNIT 1, after a detected hard impact, the system can initiate a safety check; if the rider doesn’t respond, an SOS can be sent to a selected emergency contact with the rider’s location through the app. It’s an example of technology serving a practical purpose rather than simply adding another gadget to your cycling setup.
Beyond the Helmet
• UNIT 1‘s approach doesn’t stop at helmets.
• The brand also offers smart lights, backpacks, remotes, visors, liners, mounts, and other accessories designed to complement its cycling ecosystem.
• The TORCH Backpack, for example, is positioned as everyday gear for riders who need something that works both on and off the bike.
• This ecosystem approach is particularly useful for commuters who want their cycling equipment to fit naturally into their daily routine.
Built for the Way Cities Are Changing
Urban transportation is evolving. More people are choosing bicycles, e-bikes, electric scooters, and other forms of personal mobility to move through cities. With this shift comes a need for equipment that combines traditional safety principles with modern technology.
UNIT 1‘s focus on smart helmets, connected lighting, visibility, and urban mobility reflects this changing environment. The brand describes its products as part of a broader connected ecosystem for people moving through modern cities.
A New Definition of Cycling Gear
The most interesting thing about UNIT 1 isn’t simply that its helmets contain technology. It’s the idea behind that technology.
A helmet can protect. A light can improve visibility. A signal can communicate. A sensor can detect an incident. When these functions work together, cycling equipment becomes more than something you wear—it becomes part of the riding experience. That’s where smart cycling gear is heading.
To Review
Cycling has always been about freedom, movement, and independence. As the way people ride continues to change, the equipment they use is changing with it.
UNIT 1 brings together smart technology, protective design, integrated lighting, visibility features, and everyday accessories to create a modern approach to cycling gear.
Whether you’re commuting through city streets, riding an e-bike, exploring your neighbourhood, or simply looking for more intelligent cycling equipment, UNIT 1 offers a fresh perspective on what a helmet can be. The future of cycling isn’t just about getting from one place to another.
It’s about making the journey smarter, more connected, and more confident
